What is Conscious Leadership?

Conscious leadership is a path of the heart for the leadership pioneers of this age. Leaders on this path develop their ability to combine their inner strength and intuitive skills with their existing knowledge and expertise to produce greater financial results and make a lasting impact on those they serve.

Through my own leadership experience and my coaching work with other leaders over the years, I have identified 10 key factors that are present in conscious leaders which creates a winning combination for delivering higher levels of results in comparison to their colleagues. While it's not expected that we all have mastery in each of these areas, I have found conscious leaders become aware of these areas and take action to develop them.

Conscious leaders...

1. Build strong relationships and broad networks. They create time to build one-on-one relationships with people inside and outside of their organization. They understand and use the power of collaboration and they are considered highly resourceful to their organizations as a result of their relationships and connections.

2. Utilize emotional intelligence. They have taken time to develop the skill of understanding their emotions, know how to handle themselves in reacting to others, and have a capacity to understand how to connect and relate effectively with others, particularly in difficult situations. The research shows this to be the number one area predicting success for a leader.

3. Are intentional about their purpose. They take time to reflect upon what they take a stand for and what legacy they want to leave behind. Conscious leaders are intentional about the positive outcomes they want to influence and create. They are co-creators in their own process.

4. Use their gut instinct or intuition. They recognize that ideas and information can emerge from their intuition or gut instincts and not only their rational thinking. They pay attention to these nudges and use them to explore potential innovative ideas and solutions.

5. See the web of connections across many variables: people, the marketplace, the economy, impact on the natural environment, etc. They help others 'connect the dots' to understand how their individual work relates to the whole.

6. Focus on servant leadership, helping others succeed. They realize that they and their organization will be more successful if they spend time and energy in developing leadership capacity. Their job is to remove obstacles and provide resources in service to this objective.

7. Recognize there are multiple realities and interpretations. They understand there are multiple ways to solve a problem or deliver an innovative new product or service. They feel passionate about their ideas and they also allow others to provide input as well. They are not attached to right/wrong thinking.

8. Understand the need to balance task/action with relationships/openness. They balance the energies of taking charge and making things happen with allowing creative ideas to emerge and being present to others.

9. Continual learner and teachable spirit. They are thirsty for learning more about themselves and their vocation. They seek out blind spots and ask for feedback so they can improve their effectiveness and their impact. They set up accountability structures with others to support their self-development process.

10. Use the power of love to motivate, not fear and control. They have a practice that nourishes their own soul, equipping them for their greatest challenges and opportunities. They understand love is a more expanded and effective way to motivate. They see the value in others and allow space for others to create and be involved in the process.
